I am an on-location, natural light photographer based in Dallas, Texas. My style is based on beautiful light, pastels, and intimate connections. My goal is to beautifully capture the most precious moments in your life in a way that you will cherish for many years to come. I can't wait to get to know you!
I love in-home newborn photography for so many reasons—it’s a relaxed atmosphere for new parents, it’s cozy and intimate, and you get to show off that adorable nursery! If you choose to do in-home maternity photos too, we can create some precious “before and after” shots of the spaces you’ve made ready for baby.
As a Dallas newborn photographer, I’ve had the opportunity to see some gorgeous nurseries this year, and I’ve loved sharing sweet moments with parents and their little ones in their uniquely designed spaces! Every nursery, while different, has been perfect in its own way.
I want to share my absolute favorite nursery design ideas. If you’re an expecting or new mom, I hope these trends inspire you as you plan your baby’s dream room.
Natural Light, Natural Light, and More Natural Light!
Obviously, as a natural light photographer, I always want to photograph in spaces with plenty of window light because it creates that beautiful, authentic glow that gives photos a timeless appeal. But the lighting isn’t just for me! If you know anything about baby sleep, you may know that sunlight helps regulate our circadian rhythms, meaning sunlight during the day can help a baby sleep better at night. Especially for newborns who can sometimes get their days and nights mixed up, making sure they get plenty of morning sun can repair their rhythm. So, if you can, choose a room with plenty of window light and open those blackout curtains during the day! Plus, sunlight and Vitamin D are super healthy for postpartum mamas too.
Dominant Neutrals
Even if the room you choose doesn’t have a large amount of natural light, you can still achieve that bright and airy look through the colors you choose. Light neutrals—whites, tans, and grays—are perfect for brightening a space, and they make a great canvas for adding little color accents. Neutral wood and wicker furniture are always classic too. What’s more, neutrals help create that calming atmosphere you want for a baby’s room.
Color with a Purpose
While I’m obsessed with neutrals, I still adore color when it’s incorporated in a natural way. Say yes to the rug with pink accents, the crib that adds a pop of blue, the curtains or crib sheets with a gingham pattern. Not only do these offer some gorgeous contrast backgrounds for photographs, they also add that unique touch for your unique baby.
The Accent Wall
One of my favorite nursery trends is the accent wall that adds texture to a room. Whether it’s a patterned wallpaper or board and batten wall, these touches add depth and character. They can also be the perfect place to add that pop of color. I’ve seen a lovely blue board and batten wall for a little boy’s room or a sweet floral wallpaper for a little girl’s room, but it doesn’t have to be gendered! Choose a color or pattern that fits the style of your home.
Personal Touches Instead of a Theme
While there are definitely subtle ways to incorporate a theme, you want to be careful not to overwhelm the room with characters or kitschy items. Instead, opt for elements that make the room personal to you—a custom painting by a friend, a blanket that used to belong to Dad, a bookshelf with baby books you can’t wait to read to your little one. These unique and understated details will also allow the room to grow with your child from the baby to toddler stages and beyond.
As a photographer for newborns and expecting moms in DFW, these are just a few of the nursery trends I think will stand the test of time and create a beautiful space for your little one. What are your favorite nursery design ideas?
