With each of my pregnancies, I was dying to find out the baby’s gender. I knew I would love my baby no matter what, but I also knew that discovering the baby’s gender would help me personally feel more bonded with the little person growing inside me.
It was so hard to wait for the blood test! My husband and I decided to try out a few of the old wives’ tales for predicting baby’s gender–we figured they had a 50/50 chance of being accurate anyways!
Even if you decide to wait until birth to find out your baby’s gender, it’s still fun to guess. Here are a few of the methods we tried, along with a few others I think are interesting!
- Chinese Gender Calendar
This one–which you can find online–uses the mother’s lunar age and the lunar month the baby was conceived to predict the gender. It follows an ancient Chinese gender chart. We tried this one and it accurately predicted I was having a boy!
- Heart Beat Test
According to some health professionals, if your baby’s heart rate is above 140bm, you’re having a girl. If it’s below 140bm, you’re having a boy. For me, this method wasn’t accurate, since my baby boys had a heart rate above 140bm. Some people suggest waiting until after the first trimester to predict the gender, since babies’ heart rates tend to slow down after the first three months in utero.
- How You’re Carrying
This is the method lots people love to use to guess a baby’s gender in the womb. According to legend, if you’re carrying low, you’re having a boy. If you’re carrying high, you’re having a girl. I’ve also heard that if you’re carrying “wide” it means you’re having a girl, while if you’re carrying all the weight up front, it’s a boy. People–from the barista at Starbucks to family friends–would always try to use this method to guess my baby’s gender, and they guessed correctly! I carried both of my boys very low.
- The Ring Test
This one may not have much science behind it, but it sounds like it would be fun to try! To do the test, take a ring you frequently wear and a strand of hair. Tie the strand of hair to the ring and have someone hold it, steady, over your bump. If the ring starts to move side to side like a pendulum, you’re having a boy. If it moves in circles, you’re having a girl.
- Morning Sickness
Some people swear that carrying a girl results in more morning sickness, because the extra female hormones increase your nausea. I really thought I was having a girl because with both of my boys I had so much morning sickness. This turned out to be an inaccurate method for me!
- What You’re Craving
Apparently, if you’re craving salty and protein-dense foods, it could mean you’re carrying a boy. If you want sweets–like fruit, chocolate, or candy–you could be having a girl.
- How You Look
According to some theories, if you’re having a boy, you’re more likely to have that “pregnancy glow.” On the other hand, if your skin is breaking out and you look tired, they say it means you’re having a girl. But I personally don’t think this method is accurate. As a photographer who’s done maternity sessions all over DFW, I’ve photographed women who were expecting boys and women who were expecting girls, and I think every pregnant mama is beautiful!
