I am an on-location, natural light photographer based in Dallas, Texas. My style is based on beautiful light, pastels, and intimate connections. My goal is to beautifully capture the most precious moments in your life in a way that you will cherish for many years to come. I can't wait to get to know you!
I know it can be stressful planning anything with a newborn, but remember you’ve already done the hardest part: bringing that perfect little one into the world! Whether you’re planning for an at-home session or one at my natural light Dallas studio, I promise to make this experience as smooth and peaceful as possible. But as a mom of two littles, I understand how helpful it can be to know what to expect. Here are a few tips my DFW clients have found useful in preparing for their sessions:
Try to feed baby right before the session so they feel full and relaxed. Of course, I know baby’s moods are impossible to predict. Don’t worry if baby needs to eat (for hunger or comfort) during the session–I’m always happy to work around baby’s needs. If big brothers and sisters will be in the photo shoot, also try to make sure they come with full tummies. Feel free to bring snacks for toddlers (and Mom and Dad too!)
Don’t forget baby’s favorite pacifier, bottle, or breastfeeding pillow just in case they need some extra soothing. For big brothers and sisters, pack their favorite neutral-colored toy (think wooden or Montessori toys, a stuffed dog or bear, nothing that will look too distracting if it ends up in photos)
Wraps and tight swaddles will photograph better than clothing, which can tend to look too baggy on their tiny limbs. I’ll provide a swaddle at the session, but feel free to bring your own too.
Say YES to dresses! I recommend loose, flowy dresses that flatter your figure. Soft neutrals, whites, and colors that reflect light will give your photos a timeless feel.
Soft neutrals and solid colors (no patterns) to compliment designs in Mom’s clothes will keep photos from feeling too busy and will help create a calm, relaxing mood.
Again, try for soft neutrals and pastels. Choose outfits/colors that compliment each other but don’t worry about matching everyone exactly. Try for a variety of clothing styles but not patterns. For example, one sister can wear a cute dress while another can wear a romper. Big brother can dress in a button down, while little brother wears a long sleeve t-shirt. Mixing up the wardrobe will add visual interest to your photos.
If you can, have your nails manicured, or at least trim and clean, since closeups of baby may include closeups of your hands too. Try to trim baby’s nails before-hand too, so they don’t end up scratching their face. During the session, remember to remove any items from your pockets, and try to avoid jewelry/accessories that are bulky or flashy. The simpler the better. If there are any other keepsake items you’d like photographed – baby footprints, a special blanket or lovie, letter board with a meaningful quote – bring them too!
I know life with a newborn isn’t always perfect or easy, but I also know it is a sacred time, full of wonder and love, if not also exhaustion. My hope is that these photos capture some of those precious, fleeting moments of life with a brand new little one, moments you can one day look back on without the haze of exhaustion or worry or anything else you’re feeling during this huge life change. I’ve been there, and I know how mixed these emotions can be. Don’t stress if you don’t feel like everything is “perfect.” As a photographer who’s worked with all kinds of families and littles, I’ve seen it all, from temper tantrums to blowouts to babies who sleep right through the session. I promise to give you beautiful, intimate photos you can cherish forever.
