I’m thrilled to share this recent newborn photography session at this beautiful lake in Dallas! This family was so sweet and adventurous with their brand new baby girl, and I loved that they wanted an outdoor shoot to capture this precious moment in their lives. I can’t wait to book more sessions like it as the weather cools down in DFW.

While I adore in-home and studio sessions, shooting this newborn session outside was a unique and beautiful experience, the perfect way to capture this growing family in a setting that reflected the bigness and warmth of their love.

When the Weather Feels Great, Baby Does Too

I don’t recommend outdoor sessions when the weather is too hot or too warm since babies have a hard time regulating their own temperature. But the mild weather of Texas fall and spring is ideal for an outdoor newborn session. I also love this option for newborns because many babies can feel more relaxed outdoors—perhaps it’s the fresh air or the natural white noise, but I know many babies who go from grumpy to calm simply by moving outside. A happy baby always makes for an easier, more fun session!

If You’re a New Mom, Outside is Good for You Too

With my third baby on the way, I know from experience that the newborn days can be a little crazy. When you’re up half the night and tending to everyone’s needs but your own, it’s normal to feel a little blue. Sometimes, the best thing you can do for your own health is get outside and enjoy some sunshine. Even better if you can take a walk in a beautiful location like Grapevine Lake! I loved throwing a photography session into the mix for this mama and her family, because it also gave everyone an excuse to dress up and feel pretty. At this session, Mama is wearing a dress from my exclusive client wardrobe, and the breezy outdoor setting and golden light are perfect for showing off its femenine lines and flowy skirt.

Make Your Session As Bold As Your Love 

Now don’t get me wrong—I love a quiet, indoor newborn session with neutral backdrops and dreamy nurseries. There are so many reasons that style feels timeless. But I also love how these outdoor newborn photos reflect something of the boldness and power of welcoming a brand new baby into the world. The lapping waves, the sandy shore, the wild grass, the bright, wide sky—they complement by contrast the tininess and fragility of this baby girl, and they accentuate the warmth and protection found in her parents’ arms. To become a parent is to become a shelter, to embark on a brand new adventure, to make a promise that no matter how the world turns, you will love and cherish this child you’ve helped create. It is a love as bold and spectacular as a rolling landscape, as warm and powerful as a sunset sky. As an outdoor newborn photographer, it’s a privilege to witness that kind of love, and it’s wonderful to see it reflected and magnified by the right setting.
